Local Richmond author Meg Medina to launch her latest teen novel, Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass at ART 180 Youth Art Center
Richmond, VA, February 4, 2013: Local author Meg Medina will host a book launch event and community conversation about bullying on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Atlas, ART 180’s new art center for teens located at 114. West Marshall St., Richmond, VA 23220, from 2 pm – 4:30 pm.
Medina, a Latina children’s book author from Richmond, Virginia, was the 2012 winner of the prestigious Ezra Jack Keats New Writers Award. Her latest Young Adult novel, Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass (Candlewick Press, March 2013 release) tackles the timely topic of school bullying and its devastating effect.
The teen novel focuses on 16-year-old Piddy Sanchez who is targeted by a school bully, Yaqui Delgado, during her first week at a new high school. It has been called “a nuanced, heart- wrenching and ultimately empowering story about bullying.” (Kirkus, Jan 2013) Ms. Medina will do a reading and answer questions, followed by a youth performance of excerpts from Pushed: explorations into bullying, an original play by The Conciliation Project in partnership with the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities (VCIC), and a panel discussion with community leaders from VCIC and the Richmond Peace Education Center. The event is free and open to the public, but an RSVP is requested as space is limited.
Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass has earned early starred reviews in Kirkus and The Horn Book Magazine (March issue), and has been named a 2013 Junior Library Guild Selection. Ms. Medina is also a nominee for the 16th Annual Library of Virginia Literary Awards in the fiction category for her 2012 Young Adult novel, The Girl Who Could Silence the Wind.
